Quinolones

uses a class of drugs called quinolones. They work by inhibiting the growth of certain bacterial cells. This blocks the enzymes that are responsible for the DNA replication process which is essential for the cell to survive. The outer protein on the bacterial chromosome is called DNA polymerase. This allows the bacteria to survive and multiply. The bacteria are usually found in soil, groundwater, or other sources of water. The outer protein is called topoisomerase II. The outer protein is called proteinase K. The outer protein is called topoisomerase IV. The outer protein is called DNA polymerase. This is responsible for making new DNA copies. This is called proteinReplication.

Capsule Administration

Capsules should be taken at least 2 hours before or after administration of a dose of quinolones. A single dose of ciprofloxacin can be taken w/ meals, with or without food, with or without food. Capsules should not be chewed. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.

Cautions

Use of ciprofloxacin can lead to QT prolongation (QT interval prolongation). QT prolongation may cause symptoms such as muscle weakness, shivering, headache, tingling or numbness in the arms or legs, and seizures. Seizures may occur in some patients who use quinolones. Use of ciprofloxacin w/ other quinolones is contraindicated in patients with a history of QT prolongation. Patients should be advised not to take quinolones if they have had a history of cardiac thrombosis or open heart surgery. Patients with a history of QT prolongation should use ciprofloxacin w/ caution in patients with a history of thrombotic (e.g. deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolus), pulmonary embolism who would benefit from a deep venous thromboembolic preparation, or who are at high risk from hypotension. Patients who develop torsades de pointes while receiving ciprofloxacin should contact their physician immediately. Ciprofloxacin should be used only when clearly needed during a cardiac Thrombotic Pampin preparation, as it may lead to QT prolongation.
